Australian wine has never been better.

From the west to the east coast, and south to Tasmania, Australian winemakers are making some of the finest and most sophisticated wines around the world, which are often significantly better value than our international competitors. It is something that the industry as a whole should be incredibly proud of. Yet, at the same time, many local wineries are also finding it difficult to stay in business. Both at home and abroad, there is clearly a disconnect. How is it that when the industry is kicking so many goals for both quality and value that many wineries are also struggling to survive?

One of the greatest problems the wine industry now faces is a lack of coverage and attention; richer stories that showcase individual wineries, leading regions and the industry’s rich wine history. At a time where the international wine market has never been more competitive, the coverage of Australian wine is in fact worse than ever before. While in the past there were numerous widely read wine magazines and newspaper columns which helped to showcase our key wineries and regions both locally and around the world, most of these are unfortunately now relegated to history and nothing has taken their place. 

For consumers who want more than simply reviews and scores, there are very few publications that actually scratch below the surface, to tell an in-depth story about a winery, its new releases, current vintages and the progress of Australia’s top wine regions. The leading global wine hotspots have a multitude of publications that cover their every move but Australia has largely been left behind. The Vintage Journal was launched to fill this gap, to bring together Australia’s leading wine writers in one place where they can share stories and guides to the best wines and regions around the country. We will go far beyond scores and reviews to provide the inside running on Australian wines and wine history through stories crafted by our team.

 

Andrew Caillard MW

Andrew Caillard is a multi-award winning Master of Wine best known as author of The Australian Ark, winner of the André Simon Drinks Award 2024 and a co-founder of Australian wine auction house Langton’s.

He was also an associate producer of award-winning feature documentaries Red Obsession and Blind Ambition, and author of numerous books including several reference editions such as Penfold’s “The Rewards of Patience” (editions III to IX), Imagining Coonawarra – The story of Wynns Coonawarra Estate John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon and The Essence of Dreams (the history of the Mornington Peninsula’s wine industry).  Andrew has personally won numerous awards including the IWSC Wine Communicator 2025 Trophy and Australian Wine Communicator of the Year in 2024.

Angus Hughson

Angus is an award-winning wine writer and publisher with over twenty years experience in the wine trade and media. He is the co-founder of The Vintage Journal, the Australian Editor for leading international publication VINOUS with Antonio Galloni based in New York City and the Co-Publisher of The Australian Ark with extensive additional experience as a wine judge and presenter. 

Andrea Pritzker MW

Andrea Pritzker MW is the founder of Wine inTuition, a wine education and corporate events business in Sydney. A certified WSET educator, she also works as a wine writer, consultant, wine judge and public speaker. She became a Master of Wine in 2015 and Andrea is currently Australia’s Burgundy Wine Ambassador and Ambassador for the VDP in Australia. From 2017-2022 she co-coordinated the MW Education programme in Australasia and is now a member of the governing Council for the Institute of Masters of Wine. Andrea is also co-chair of the IMW Symposium to be held in Adelaide in November 2026. In 2022, she was awarded the prize for Dux at the Len Evans Tutorial.

Jeni Port

Jeni Port is one of Australia's top wine communicators and judges. Based in Melbourne, Jeni was the longest-serving wine writer on The Age newspaper and continues to write for most Australian wine magazines including Winestate, Wine Selector, Halliday Wine Companion magazine, Gourmet Traveller WINE, Winning and Il Tridente. She was named Wine Communicator of the Year and Legend of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival in 2014 and in 2018 was named Legend of the Vine.

Tony Love

Tony is best known for his 10 years as News Corp’s National Wine Writer, with weekly columns in major metropolitan mastheads throughout Australia including The Adelaide Advertiser, The Sydney Daily Telegraph and the Melbourne Herald Sun. He continues to write feature articles and columns for all the major Australian wine media publications. Tony has also worked as a restaurant reviewer, section editor, book editor, digital content provider, journalism teacher and was named Wine Communicators of Australia 2018 Legend of the Vine (SA).
